Taliban say soldier who killed foreign troops join them

The Afghan Taliban says that an Afghan National Army [ANA] soldier, who killed a foreign serviceman at the Kandahar air brigade and injured a number of others five days ago, has escaped from the detention centre with the help of another ANA soldier and both have joined them.

The Taliban spokesman, Qari Mohammad Yousaf Ahmadi, said in a statement the soldier, Ehsanollah, has joined the Taliban fighters after he escaped from the prison.

The Taliban spokesman said that the soldier who assisted Ehsanollah in escaping from the detention centre had also joined the Taliban.

Qari Ahmadi noted: "The companion of Ehsanollah due to great Islamic and Afghan zeal and honour did not want to hand over this hero Afghan to savage foreign forces and, adopting a special tactic, he accompanied Ehsanollah getting out of the airport and they both joined the Taliban safely."

Qari Yousaf Ahmadi added that the assailant soldiers, Ehsanollah, had links with the Taliban earlier, and the Taliban did not claim responsibility for this attack because Ehsanollah had been detained and the Taliban did not want to create problems for him.

An Afghan military official in Kandahar, Gen Abdol Hamid, says that the assailant soldier managed to escape with the help of another soldier.

The Taliban said that name of the soldier who escaped is Ehsanollah and he is a resident of Nangarhar Province [eastern Afghanistan] but Gen Abdol Hamid said that his name is Lambar Khan and he is a resident of Laghman Province in eastern Afghanistan and his accomplice was also a resident of Laghman Province.

The soldier had opened fire at foreign soldiers at the Kandahar airport on 9 July and one foreign soldier was killed and seven others injured as a result.

Soldiers joining the Taliban show that the Taliban have influence in Afghan security forces.
