Summers Peace wins $50,000 Washington State Legislators Stakes at Emerald Downs | Horse Racing

California invader Summers Peace dominated the local fillies and mares Sunday with a 3-?-length victory over Rewritten in the $50,000 Washington State Legislators Stakes at Emerald Downs.

With northern California-based jockey David G. Lopez aboard for his first Emerald Downs victory, Summers Peace ran 6-? furlongs in 1:16.29, and paid $22.60, $11.60 and $8.80.

The winner shook off 6-to-5 betting favorite Cliff?s Secret into the lane, was 2-? lengths clear past mid-stretch and poured it on late.

?She was really relaxed and going easily,? said Lopez, whose only previous visit here was a seventh aboard Autism Awareness in the 2009 Longacres Mile. ?I tried to steal the race by breaking away at the eighth pole. If they catch me then they catch me, but I didn?t hear anybody coming. I?m just lucky I got to ride this mare.?

The 5-year-old Kentucky-bred mare by Orientate ?-owned by Victoria Linden of Caldwell, Idaho?had lost 10 straight races prior to Sunday.

Summers Peace is trained Larry Ross, but he was quick to credit Charles Jenda, the mare?s trainer in all previous races, mainly longer events on turf and synthetic surfaces at Golden Gate Fields.

Summers Peace is 4-5-4 in 20 starts overall for $153,374 in purse earnings, including $27,500 for Sunday?s win.

Rewritten, ridden by Leslie Mawing, rallied from 10th place to finish second and paid $13.80 and $6.40. It was one length back to Dream Sweeper, a 33-to-1 long shot ridden by Jose Zunino, and a $14.20 show payoff.

Hard Way Ten, another California shipper, finished fourth and was followed by Cliff?s Secret, Zenovit, Eyes On the Prize, Fifie?s Fantasy, Sweet Nellie Brown, Sis?s Sis and previously unbeaten You Me and Ema B.

Cliff?s Secret and Sis?s Sis, both from the Jim Penney barn, dueled through an opening quarter-mile in :22.30, with Summers Peace just a head back in third place. Summers Peace and Cliff?s Secret drew away into the turn, running the half-mile in :44.56, as Sis?s Sis tailed off.

Summers Peace took over from there, quickly opening a two-length lead, and the route was on from there.

?I knew she had a lot of speed, but I also knew there was going to be a lot of other speed in the race,? Lopez said. ?I wanted to be close to the front as long, as I didn?t have to use her up too early. She was really relaxed and going easily. I?m just lucky I got to ride this mare.?

The $50,000 Boeing Handicap at one mile is next for fillies and mares Saturday, July 16.

NOTES: Seven Torrents ($5.60) led gate-to-wire under Juan Gutierrez to win the one-mile sub-feature in 1:37.52. Wasserman edged Dress Code for second and upped his Emerald Downs career earnings record to $520,427.

Trainer Charles Essex doubled with a pair of Washington-bred veterans: 7-year-old Olympic Lights ($14) in the fourth race and 5-year-old Who?s Your Next Ex ($8.60) in the seventh?Trainer Jim Penney also had two winners including Seven Torrents?Deborah Hoonan-Trujillo was the only jockey to ride two winners.

Golden Gate Fields concluded its 2010-11 winter/spring meeting Sunday. Action now swings to the Northern California Fair season beginning Thursday with a four-day meeting at Stockton?Live racing at Emerald Downs resumes Friday with first post at 6:15 p.m.

Wednesday simulcast racing includes an enormous Pick 6 carryover of $1,130,718 at Belmont Park.
