Gambhir admits they did not play good cricket against Pune ? Cricket News Update
Following a seven-run narrow defeat at the hands of the weakest side of the season, Pune Warriors on Tuesday, Kolkata Knight Rider?s skipper Gautam Gambhir admitted that his side did not play good cricket, and rightly ended up on the losing side.
Gambhir and Co went into the match facing a must win situation but made a mess of their chances by first conceding 170 runs in 20 overs, and then failing to chase down the target, despite being in the driver?s seat at one stage.
After winning the toss, Gambhir put the Warriors into bat, but failed to restrict the lowly ranked opposition courtesy expensive bowling spells from Lakshmipathy Balaji and Jacques Kallis, who went on to concede 41 and 48 runs respectively from 4 overs apiece. Manish Pandey top scored with 66 runs from 47 balls and skipper Aaron Finch scored 48 runs from 32 balls.
The defending champions went off to a tumultuous start, with the top three batsmen scoring a combined tally of just 14 runs. However, Yusuf Pathan (72 off 44 balls) and Ryan ten Doeschate (30-ball 42) fought back with a 98-run stand for the fourth wicket partnership, to take the Knight Riders to 127 to 3 from 29 for 3. Ten Doeschate was declared out in the 16th over for obstructing the field, while Pathan departed an over later, taking with them Kolkata?s hopes of making it to the tournament play offs, as the defending champions ended up amassing 163 for 7 from their allotted quota of 20 overs.
While speaking to media reporters after the seven run defeat, Gambhir lauded Pathan and ten Doeschate, however, he admitted that overall the title holders played below their potential.
"The way Yusuf was going we should have won the game. It has been the story of Kolkata this year. It was a freak dismissal, haven't seen anything like that before,? said the left-hander at the post-match press conference.
"We have just not played good cricket, the table shows that. We have been pretty inconsistent. This is what will happen in a tournament when all the teams are balanced," the KKR skipper went on to add.
