Dozens of people have been seriously injured after two reported explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. At least 12 people were seriously injured and transported to local hospitals according to Boston ABC affiliate WCVB.

The Boston Globe cited witnesses who reported hearing two large explosions shortly before 3pm ET. The Associated Press reported at least one of the explosions came near the entrance of the Fairmont Copley Hotel. Meanwhile, photos posted on Twitter showed several people severely injured along Boylston Street--at the center of the Boston's main shopping district.

Phones were not being answered at the Boston Police Department. But scanner traffic indicated police were investigating "several suspect packages" on Boylston Street.

Twitter user Matt Norlinder posted a screenshot of the explosion captured by the local CBS affiliate.

Boston police said on Monday that there was at least one explosion near 673 Boylston Street near the finish line of the Boston Marathon with another explosion reported.

The explosion occurred as thousands of runners finished the 117th running of the Boston Maratahon, with crowds watching and cheering at the finish.

Will Ritter, the spokesman for a Massachusetts Senate candidate, said that he heard what sounded like two explosions and saw smoke rising near the Boston Public Library. He said that he saw three fire engines and police running to the site.

Ritter said that people hit the ground.

Janet Wu, a reporter for NBC affiliate WHDH, told NBC News that she heard two loud explosions.

"There was an explosion, police, fire and EMS are on the scene. We have no indication of how many people are injured," a spokeswoman for the Boston Police Department said.

Mike Mitchell of Vancouver, Canada, a runner who had finished the race said he was looking back at the finish line and saw a "massive explosion."

Smoke rose 50 feet in the air, Mitchell said. People began running and screaming after hearing the noise, Mitchell said.

"Everybody freaked out," Mitchell said.

A spokesman for the Boston Marathon told reporters that no one would be allowed in or out of the hotel that was serving as headquarters for the event.
