Skin cancer and other sun-related illnesses ? Take care on holiday ...

The summer is most people?s favourite time of year, it is that time where we can look forward to holidays and bask in the sunshine. We are all so eager to look good, and developing a glowing tan is often a priority when going on holiday. Yet most of us don?t realise the damage we are doing to our skin, and potentially our long-term health. We hear the warnings, yet we don?t seem to listen and continue to sit out in the sun for hours on end with barely any protection.

What sometimes doesn?t occur to us is that we will ?dry out? quicker in the sun, this means literally, but also internally. Due to our skin pores releasing more fluids in the sun through sweat, we lose more fluid than normal. This is why it is important to ensure we drink regularly to avoid dehydration. If you are starting to become dehydrated you may develop a headache, become tired and lethargic and find that you pass urine much less as our bodies try to hold onto fluids. Drinking throughout the day will stop this from happening.

A slightly more unsettling condition that can develop from over exposure to the sun is sunstroke. Sunstroke develops when our body temperature gets to high. Symptoms include breathing difficulties, fainting and being sick. If you think you have sunstroke then get medical help straight away, it is important to get treated quickly as can lead to further problems.

The main illness we are warned about caused by excessive sunbathing is skin cancer. Skin cancer kills, although can be treated if caught early on. It is the UV rays in the sun that causes skin cancer and it is said to kill over 2000 people in a year. There are 3 different types of skin cancers and symptoms can be changes in the skin pigmentation, changes to moles and changes to freckles. Applying regular sun cream, covering sensitive skin up and staying out of strong sun will keep your risk low.

So it is important to remember to use sun cream regularly and cover up moles or sensitive skin. Keep hydrated and stay out of the midday sun when it is at its strong. Take responsibility for the safety of your skin.
