Intel officials: Pakistan Taliban No. 2 is buried

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (AP) ? The Pakistani Taliban's deputy leader was buried hours after he was killed in a U.S. drone strike, Pakistani intelligence officials and militants said Thursday.

The death of Waliur Rehman has not been confirmed by the White House or the official Pakistani Taliban spokesman, but if true, it would be a major blow to the militant group whose bombings and other attacks have killed thousands.

Rehman's killing in a U.S. drone strike on Wednesday could also rattle the incoming Pakistani ruling party's goal of negotiating with the Taliban. Rehman had previously been considered more amenable to peace talks than his superior, Hakeemullah Mehsud, who remains at large.

Rehman and four other people were killed on Wednesday morning by the drone-fired missiles that slammed into a house on the outskirts of Miran Shah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region, according to Pakistani intelligence officials.

Two intelligence officials told The Associated Press on Thursday that informants on the ground told them Rehman was buried on Wednesday night. Also, two militants told the AP they attended the funeral. All four spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Journalists have little access to North Waziristan or other tribal regions bordering Afghanistan, making independent confirmation of the claims difficult.

The missile attack was the first since Pakistan's May 11 elections, which ushered in a new ruling party that has promised to push the U.S. to end such strikes. It also followed President Barack Obama's speech last Thursday during which he pledged more restrictive rules on the use of drones.

White House spokesman Jay Carney declined to confirm Wednesday if Rehman was dead. He said if it's true, Rehman's death would deprive the militant group of its chief military strategist, a man the U.S. says was involved in an attack that killed seven CIA employees in Afghanistan.

In 2010, Washington offered $5 million for information leading to Rehman.

The U.S. drone program is deeply unpopular in Pakistan, even though the number of strikes has dropped significantly since 2010. The strikes usually target al-Qaida-linked insurgents or other militants who fight in Afghanistan, but some have killed militants at war with Pakistan's government.

The Pakistani Taliban has been battling government forces for years in a bid to push them from the tribal regions, cut Pakistan's ties with the U.S. and eventually establish their brand of hardline Islam across Pakistan.

Pakistan's incoming prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, has said he is against the use of American drones on Pakistani soil, and that he is open to negotiating with the Pakistani Taliban. But Rehman's death could complicate that by depriving the process of a potential key player.

Rehman was believed to be about 42 or 43 years old and was from South Waziristan, said Mansur Mahsud, director of administration and research at the Islamabad-based FATA Research Center. He had already been fighting American troops in Afghanistan when the Pakistani Taliban was created in late 2007 and he turned his focus more onto Pakistani targets.

"He was a very cool-minded person, a very intelligent person and he was someone that the government could talk to," Mahsud said.

The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the drone strike Wednesday but did not mention Rehman. Senior Pakistani civilian and military officials are known to have supported some of the drone strikes in the past, but many say that is no longer the case.

Petraeus gets job with investment firm KKR

Retired Army Gen. David Petraeus will take a new job with investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P. as he attempts to rebuild his reputation after an extramarital affair with a biographer triggered his resignation as CIA director last fall.

Petraeus, 60, will serve as chairman of the New York firm's newly created KKR Global Institute. He was CIA director from September 2011 until last November. Before that, Petraeus served more than 37 years in the U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of four-star general.

Petraeus served as commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan and also commanded forces in Iraq in 2007 and 2008, when violence in that country dropped following a surge in military forces.

KKR said Thursday that Petraeus will support its investment teams and portfolio companies when studying new investments, especially in new locations. The company did not detail terms of its agreement with Petraeus, but a spokeswoman said he will serve in a consultant's role.

Petraeus has a doctorate from Princeton University and has written widely on international relations, military strategy and tactics, and national security issues. He also has taught economics and international relations at the U.S. Military Academy.

Petraeus will add the new job to a couple of teaching assignments. Earlier this month, the University of Southern California announced that he will join its faculty to teach classes and mentor ROTC members.

In April, Macaulay Honors College at City University of New York named Petraeus a visiting professor for public policy starting next August. He said in a statement released by Macaulay that he was looking forward to leading a seminar on the global economic slowdown.

KKR said the global institute will help it focus on issues that can affect its global investments. Those include public policy, regulatory and technology trends. The institute also will build on KKR's push to help its portfolio companies expand globally.

KKR invests in companies and, in general, hopes to profit by selling them a few years later. KKR also has an asset management business, which invests in debt and equities, and a capital markets business, which arranges debt financing for deals and underwrites stock sales for other companies. It had $78.3 billion in assets under management as of March 31.

Shares of the company fell 5 cents to $20.06 Thursday before markets opened. But the stock has climbed more than 30 percent since closing 2012 at $15.23.

9 Classic Distilleries That Crank Out America's Favorite Liquor

9 Classic Distilleries That Crank Out America's Favorite Liquor

Even though whiskey predates the United States by centuries, it's an undeniably American liquor. It helped George Washington muster troops during the American revolution. It traveled with settlers making their way out West for the first time. It's partially responsible for spurring Prohibition, and in 1964, Bourbon was officially recognized by congress as ?a distinctive product of the U.S.A.?

Why such a rich history? Besides the fact that many early Americans had roots in whiskey-producing countries like the British Isles, perhaps it was the sheer simplicity of the whiskey-making process, which only requires water, fire, and grains. And a distillery to house them, of course.

Despite the recent proliferation of craft whiskey-makers, distilleries built during the golden age of whiskey are landmarks. In fact, the buildings in which whiskey is produced are as just a much a part of American heritage as the product that comes out of them. These are some of the classic?and new classic?distilleries from all across the country:

George Washington Distillery: Alexandria, Virginia

9 Classic Distilleries That Crank Out America's Favorite Liquor

Although it's no longer operational, George Washington's Distillery at his estate at Mount Vernon has been there since 1797, when a Scottish farm manager suggested it would be a good business venture.

Heaven Hill Distillery: Bardstown, Kentucky

9 Classic Distilleries That Crank Out America's Favorite Liquor

Obviously we can't talk about American whiskey without spending some time in Kentucky. Heaven Hill Distillery produces a number of spirits, most importantly Evan Williams Bourbon, which is the first whiskey on record produced in the state, dating back to 1783, when Kentucky was still a county in Virginia. The 1930s-era warehouses pictured are where bourbon is aged.

Next stop on the Bourbon trail? Jim Beam, which has been distilling whiskey for more than 200 years.

Maker's Mark might be a newer name when it comes to old whiskey?it's only been produced since 1954?but its facilities are timeless, listed on the National Historic Register of Places since 1974.

Jack Daniels Distillery: Lynchburg, Tennessee

9 Classic Distilleries That Crank Out America's Favorite Liquor

Of course, we must travel down to Tennessee to visit our old friend Jack Daniels, which has been making sour mash whiskey in square bottles out of Moore County since 1866. Included in the National Register of Historic places, it's the sole remaining distillery in a county where there were once 15.

Willett Distillery: Bardstown, Kentucky

9 Classic Distilleries That Crank Out America's Favorite Liquor

Willett is a bygone distiller of Bourbon and Rye that has recently been resurrected. Shuttered until the 1980s, the Willett family-owned parent company just began making test batches in January 2012. Unfortunately, because of the aging process, you'll have to wait a couple of years to have a taste.

Kings County Distillery: Brooklyn, New York

9 Classic Distilleries That Crank Out America's Favorite Liquor

Kings County Distillery is the oldest New York City whiskey maker, and it was the city's first distillery out of the gate when Prohibition ended. It's housed in the Brooklyn Navy Yard's 113-year-old Paymaster Building.

Tuthilltown Spirits: Gardiner, New York

9 Classic Distilleries That Crank Out America's Favorite Liquor

Tuthilltown Spirits also gets some New York street cred?it was the first distillery in the state opened after Prohibition. Like many old fashioned distilleries, it also has a gristmill.

St. George Spirits: Alameda, California

And now for something completely different, St. George Spirits, a craft company housed in an old, 65,000 square-foot airplane hangar.

TerraMaster F2 NAS

By Samara Lynn

The TerraMaster F2 NAS ($148 USD, street with no drives) comes from TerraMaster?a China-based storage vendor with not much presence in the U.S. market. They sent a unit for review hoping to break more into the NAS space in this country. After taking the TerraMaster for a test, I have to say the company will need to step up its game to compete with the likes of SMB/consumer NAS market dominators such as Synology, Iomega, and Drobo. The Terramaster offers good performance but in my testing I found issues with this NAS that I had never seen before, issues that keep me from recommending it.

Specs
The TerraMaster features a Marvell 6282 processor, 512MB DDRIII RAM, and 16MB flash memory. It's a dual-bay device that supports RAID 0, 1, disk spanning, and JBOD. The vendor also offers the device in a four-bay model. The F2 shipped to me diskless. It only uses 3.5" SATA hard drives.

The unit's design is unique, featuring a silver casing with a cool handle on top for toting around. I really like the handle for this small, desktop form factor. Unfortunately, that handle may be the best feature of this device.

The front panel has power and hard disk drives LEDs which represent the state of the drives and system based on the LED's colors. The back panel has a Gigabit Ethernet port and a USB 3.0 port. The USB port fits the square Type B USB plug, but included in the packaging is a Type B to Type A USB cable.

This NAS also has a feature I've never seen before. There is a small dial in the back which you insert a tiny screwdriver in (also included) and turn to set the drive architecture the way you want. So you can turn the dial right to set the device at RAID 0; down for RAID 1; left for BIG (which is disk spanning); and up for CLEAR (which sets the drives as JBOD). I had a sense of foreboding about setting up RAID in this manner. That feeling turned out to be prescient?more on that next. For more on RAID, see PCMag's Guide to RAID.

RAID Setup
After connecting the NAS to the network I first went about setting up RAID. Using the tiny tool, I set the dial to RAID 0. Following the device's instructions, I then used another included tool?a thin, silver stick, the perfect size for inserting into recessed reset buttons on networking products?the instructions refer to this tool as a "thimble." However, it's unlike any thimble I've ever seen.

You have to use this little stick to then push the tiny RAID Reset button, also on the back of the device. Get this: While you are pushing this button, you then have to power the device up at the same time, and keep pressing the reset button, until the NAS beeps. Yes, performing the RAID setup this way was as awkward as it sounds.

Five Stairsteps singer Clarence Burke Jr. dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Clarence Burke Jr., lead singer of the group the Five Stairsteps that sang the 1970 hit "O-o-h Child," has died. He was 64.

Burke died on Sunday ? a day after his birthday ? in Marietta, Ga., where he lived, said Joe Marno, his friend and manager.

The cause of his death was not disclosed.

Formed in Chicago in 1965, the Five Stairsteps included Burke, three of his brothers and a sister. They owed their name to their mother, who said that they looked like stairsteps when they stood beside each other in order of age, the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/15h1VkY) reported.

Burke, the eldest brother, was the group's producer and choreographer, played guitar and wrote many of the songs. He wrote the group's first single, "You Waited Too Long." He was not yet 17 when it rose to No. 6 on Billboard's R&B charts in 1966.

Other hits included "World of Fantasy," ''Don't Change Your Love" and "From Us to You."

However, the group's biggest hit was 1970's "O-o-h Child," written by Stan Vincent. Its signature refrain croons "o-o-h child" and promises that "things are gonna get easier."

The song has been covered many times and has repeatedly been used in movies and TV shows.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked it No. 402 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

The group disbanded in the late 1970s but the brothers briefly reformed as the Invisible Man's Band and had a 1980 success with the dance single "All Night Thing."

In recent years, Burke performed solo concerts and continued to record with family and friends, according to a family memorial.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? Wrestling, squash and baseball-softball have made the IOC short list for inclusion in the 2020 Olympics.

Three months after being dropped from the 2020 program, wrestling took a big step toward keeping its Olympic status.

Eliminated from contention Wednesday were five sports ? karate, roller sports, sport climbing, skateboarding and the Chinese martial art of wushu.

The IOC executive board will submit wrestling, squash and baseball-softball to the full IOC assembly for a final decision on Sept. 8 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Rift

Over three decades have passed since the end of the Holy War, but the continent of Taakeria is still recovering from the devastation it unleashed. It seemed that the entire world would face a depression until three years ago, when a miracle presented itself to the people of Akhar. Deep in a mine, a miner found a peculiar, glowing, purple gemstone, the likes of which he had never seen before. The gemstone ended up in the hands of a royal mage, who discovered that it had the power to greatly amplify magic, and also "memorised" any spells which it was used to amplify. The stone could cast any spells it had "memorised" when made to do so by a mage, whether or not the mage could cast the spell themself, and seemingly never ran out of energy to cast them. Akhar upped its mining efforts in an attempt to find more of this mysterious stone, and it did. The stone was named "magicite" and soon all the other nations began to search for it within their own borders. There seemed to be an abundant supply of it everywhere, and it was soon discovered that it could produce limitless amounts of energy. Magicite veins also began to grow, expanding from beneath the Earth up to the surface. Many speculated that it had formed during the reformation, others claimed that it was a gift from the gods to help Taakeira get back on its feet. Whatever it was, it all seemed too good to be true...

But every silver lining has a cloud. Recently, strange tears in space have been appearing across the entire continent, which have come to be known as "rifts". The rifts seemed harmless enough at first, the first reported rift did nothing; it was just there. Days after, a rift from which a pail's worth of water poured from was reported, and days after that a rift from which a brick fell appeared. The rifts seemed harmless enough, so nobody tried to do anything about them. These harmless rifts carried on popping up for some time, but then the rifts gave people a reason to fear them. From a rift in Yesterhold a hideous creature appeared: a black, two-headed, venom-spitting snake the size of a big dog. The creature slithered into a village and murdered six villagers and a guard before it was finally put down. The news spread like wildfire, and the rifts became increasingly common. More monsters spawned from the rifts, not all of them like the snake that had wreaked havoc in Yesterhold, some did not even resemble worldly creatures. To make matters worse, Gar has begun to rearm; using magicite to power war machines and make weapons from. Many fear that Gar is summoning the monsters, although monsters have been spawning in Gar as well. The more widely accepted theory is that the use of magicite is causing the rifts, but the use of magicite has not been banned anywhere, as there has been little evidence to back up this theory. But now the least expected thing has appeared from a rift: a person. Nobody knows who this person is; even they don't know. Are they a stranger from another universe, are they the cause of the rifts, or are they here to end them? Only time will tell.

Setting

Taakeira is a large continent in a peculiar shape, redesigned by the gods after the Holy War in an attempt to prevent war from ever breaking out again. The continent consists of 5 circular peninsulas all joined to a central peninsula by land bridges which are guarded by dragons. As if that wasn't enough, the central peninsula is inhabited by a dragon even more powerful than those who guard the bridges, and a dragon of equal power guards the seas.

Taakeira's nations vary greatly in culture and geography, ranging from the blizzard-beaten mountains and cave cities of Ik'Ra to the nomadic tribes who roam the deserts and badlands of Dhara. Most nations are still on the mend from the Holy War, but some, like Gar, have almost fully recovered. Different people are in different minds about current affairs, many are sure that magicite will be their salvation, some fear the rifts, and others fear Gar.

Our story begins in 34PR, in a small village in Akhar by the border with Gar, by the name of Ley. Ley is a rather unexciting place, nothing out of the ordinary has ever happened there; nothing until today. For the first time, a rift has appeared in Ley's surrounding area, and even more unexpectedly, a person has appeared from it. But this person will be the least of Ley's worries, as Garian soldiers raze Ley, leaving only a handful of survivors. "Rift" is their story.

The Roleplay

Rift is a fantasy roleplay with potentially limitless possibilities. The roleplay has a huge world in which to take place, and as much or little of it can be used as the participants see fit. The story will follow the journey of the survivors who escaped the beginning of Gar's conquest, and can go in numerous directions. The story will be largely character-driven as most of the story will revolve around the decisions of the characters, for better or for worse.

The roleplay is semi-literate, so I'm expecting at least 300 words in each post. I also want to see good grammar and spelling, but the odd misspelled word here or there is fine; we all make mistakes sometimes. I would like to see at least one post from each roleplayer every couple of days.

WisdomTree Investments Shows Strength At 10-Week Line WETF ...

Although the market remains in an uptrend, the comfort cushion is gone for some top-rated stocks.

IBD 50 issues, such as Alaska Air (ALK) and LinkedIn (LNKD), are now trading below their 10-week moving averages.

Other leaders went for months making no contact with the 10-week line ? until recently. Biomed stock Celgene (CELG) is a prominent example.

What should be made of these developments? Two things.

First, investors should keep a close eye on the price-and-volume action of the indexes. The faltering among some leaders could remain confined to a few names, or the bad action could spread.

Second, pay attention to stocks that started to show weak action and then rebounded sharply from the 10-week line. When that rebound comes in strong volume, it points to big money scooping up shares.

WisdomTree Investments (WETF) is a good example of positive action. The stock closed more than 20% above its 10-week line on May 21.

On May 22, the stock slid 4% in 30% faster trade than usual. The next day, WisdomTree plunged 17% at the open to just under its 10-week line. But what looked like the beginnings of a vile day turned into something positive.

The stock staged a positive reversal, cutting a nearly 17% loss down to less than 3%. Volume was 207% above average. As of Tuesday, WisdomTree closed the day just 6% off its 52-week high.

The company is a pure-play ETF provider. After six years of losses, WisdomTree scored a profit of 3 cents a share in 2011 on a 57% surge in revenue. Last year, earnings grew 267% to 11 cents a share on 30% revenue growth.

The Street expects EPS to leap 245% to 38 cents a share this year. Sales are expected to jump 83%.

After-tax margin has stepped up in four of the past five quarters ? from 6.4% to 26.8%.

Scientists develop CO2 sequestration technique

May 28, 2013 ? Lawrence Livermore scientists have discovered and demonstrated a new technique to remove and store atmospheric carbon dioxide while generating carbon-negative hydrogen and producing alkalinity, which can be used to offset ocean acidification.

The team demonstrated, at a laboratory scale, a system that uses the acidity normally produced in saline water electrolysis to accelerate silicate mineral dissolution while producing hydrogen fuel and other gases. The resulting electrolyte solution was shown to be significantly elevated in hydroxide concentration that in turn proved strongly absorptive and retentive of atmospheric CO2.

Further, the researchers suggest that the carbonate and bicarbonate produced in the process could be used to mitigate ongoing ocean acidification, similar to how an Alka Seltzer neutralizes excess acid in the stomach.

"We not only found a way to remove and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while producing valuable H2, we also suggest that we can help save marine ecosystems with this new technique," said Greg Rau, an LLNL visiting scientist, senior scientist at UC Santa Cruz and lead author of a paper appearing this week (May 27) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. When carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, a significant fraction is passively taken up by the ocean forming carbonic acid that makes the ocean more acidic. This acidification has been shown to be harmful to many species of marine life, especially corals and shellfish. By the middle of this century, the globe will likely warm by at least 2 degrees Celsius and the oceans will experience a more than 60 percent increase in acidity relative to pre-industrial levels. The alkaline solution generated by the new process could be added to the ocean to help neutralize this acid and help offset its effects on marine biota. However, further research is needed, the authors said.

"When powered by renewable electricity and consuming globally abundant minerals and saline solutions, such systems at scale might provide a relatively efficient, high-capacity means to consume and store excess atmospheric CO2 as environmentally beneficial seawater bicarbonate or carbonate," Rau said. "But the process also would produce a carbon-negative 'super green' fuel or chemical feedstock in the form of hydrogen."

Most previously described chemical methods of atmospheric carbon dioxide capture and storage are costly, using thermal/mechanical procedures to concentrate molecular CO2 from the air while recycling reagents, a process that is cumbersome, inefficient and expensive.

"Our process avoids most of these issues by not requiring CO2 to be concentrated from air and stored in a molecular form, pointing the way to more cost-effective, environmentally beneficial, and safer air CO2 management with added benefits of renewable hydrogen fuel production and ocean alkalinity addition," Rau said.

The team concluded that further research is needed to determine optimum designs and operating procedures, cost-effectiveness, and the net environmental impact/benefit of electrochemically mediated air CO2 capture and H2 production using base minerals.

Other Livermore researchers include Susan Carroll, William Bourcier, Michael Singleton, Megan Smith and Roger Aines.

'Ultraselective' process to make valuable chemical from biomass

May 28, 2013 ? Chemical engineering researchers Wei Fan, Paul Dauenhauer and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Amherst report this week that they've discovered a new chemical process to make p-xylene, an important ingredient of common plastics, at 90 percent yield from lignocellulosic biomass, the highest yield achieved to date. Details are in the current issue of Green Chemistry.

As Dauenhauer explains, the chemical industry currently produces p-xylene from more expensive petroleum, while the new process will make the same chemical from lower-cost, renewable biomass. He and colleagues call the process "ultraselective" because of its ability to achieve 90 percent selectivity for the desired product. "The biomass-derived p-xylene can be mixed with petroleum-based plastics, and consumers will not be able to tell the difference. But manufacturers and chemical companies will be able to operate more sustainably and at lower cost in the future because of this discovery," he adds.

Consumers already know the plastics made from this new process by the triangular recycling label "#1" on plastic containers. Xylene chemicals are used to produce a plastic called PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which is currently used in many products including soda bottles, food packaging, synthetic fibers for clothing and even automotive parts, Dauenhauer says.

The UMass Amherst team's discovery reveals the impact of nano-structured catalyst design on renewable chemical processes. Led by Fan, they examined a large number of nano-porous catalytic materials, including zeolites, investigating their capability for producing p-xylene. A specific material identified as 'zeolite beta' was found to be optimal. "We discovered that the performance of the biomass reaction was strongly affected by the nanostructure of the catalyst, which we were able to engineer and achieve 90 percent yield," Fan says.

Besides Dauenhauer and Fan, the research team includes Chun-Chih Chang, Sara Green and C. Luke Williams, doctoral students in chemical engineering at UMass Amherst.

French police search for man who stabbed soldier

PARIS (AP) ? French anti-terrorism investigators were combing video surveillance tapes Sunday as they continued their manhunt for a suspect who stabbed a soldier in the throat in the commercial district of La Defense outside Paris.

The 23-year-old soldier, Cedric Cordier, was in uniform patrolling the busy underground corridors where shops and crowded public transport lines converge beneath the famous Arch of La Defense.

Saturday's stabbing came days after a British soldier was hacked to death on a London street in broad daylight in a suspected terrorist attack that has raised fears of potential copycat strikes. However, there was no immediate confirmation of any link between the two attacks.

French police have surveillance video of a suspect taken before and after the attack. There are several security cameras operated by public transport agency RATP and others placed throughout the underground shopping center, according to one police official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss terrorism investigations.

The official, who has not seen the videos himself, said investigators describe the suspect as tall. He couldn't provide any other description of the suspect. Police are going over videos to try to identify the suspect, trace his escape route and determine whether he was acting alone, the official said.

Cordier remained hospitalized Sunday, but officials said his throat wound wasn't life-threatening.

The French soldier was on a group patrol as part of a national protection program when he was attacked from behind.

Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who visited Cordier at the hospital Saturday evening, said he had been targeted because he was a soldier. Anti-terrorism investigators are leading the hunt for the attacker, but officials have yet to determine whether terrorism is involved, the police official said. Police also questioned witnesses to the attack.

Speaking shortly after the attack while on an official visit to Ethiopia, President Francois Hollande said that while "all hypotheses" will be investigated, there didn't appear to be a link with Wednesday's deadly attack in London.

French security forces have been on heightened alert since their country launched a military intervention in the African nation of Mali in January to regain territory seized by Islamic radicals. British Prime Minister David Cameron was in Paris meeting with Hollande when he first received word of the London attack.

Last year, three French paratroopers were killed by a man police described as a French-born Islamic extremist who then went on to strike a Jewish school in southern France, killing four more people.

'Fast' races past 'Hangover' at weekend box office

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? It's a blowout at the box office.

"Fast & Furious 6" is revving past "The Hangover Part III" in the No. 1 position at the Memorial Day weekend box office.

Universal Pictures' sixth installment of its muscle car franchise featuring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker debuted with $98.5 million domestically from Friday to Sunday, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Meanwhile, the final edition of the raunchy Warner Bros. comedy trilogy starring Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms opened with $42.1 million in the No. 2 spot.

Universal estimates that by the end of the four-day holiday weekend Monday, "Fast & Furious 6" will have pulled in $122.2 million domestically and $275.5 million worldwide. That would give it the second-biggest opening of the year behind "Iron Man 3."

Paramount Pictures' sci-fi sequel "Star Trek: Into Darkness" earned $38 million at No. 3 in its second weekend at the box office, while the Fox animated film "Epic" opened at No. 4 with $34.2 million.

Overall domestic receipts for the four-day Memorial Day weekend are expected to come in ahead of 2011's record-breaking $276 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com, estimated that four-day revenues this time will total $323 million, about 15 percent above Memorial Day weekend in 2011, when "The Hangover Part II" delivered a $103.4 million debut.

PARIS (AP) ? Serena Williams won her opening match at the French Open, and then achieved a career breakthrough by speaking French to the crowd for the first time.

"I'm a beginner," Williams said ? referring to her French, not tennis.

Her play spoke volumes Sunday. Williams returned to the red clay that tripped her up in the first round a year ago, channeled any lingering frustration into her overpowering strokes and ? voila ? drubbed Anna Tatishvili 6-0, 6-1.

Roger Federer, the 2009 champion, remained unbeaten in first-round matches at major tournaments since 2003 by sweeping qualifier Pablo Carreno Busta 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. Sam Querrey, the highest-ranked American on the men's tour, equaled his best showing at Roland Garros by reaching the second round when he beat Lukas Lacko 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Williams lost her opening match at a Grand Slam tournament for the only time in her career a year ago, when she was beaten by France's Virginie Razzano. That was the most shocking in a succession of losses for Williams at Roland Garros, where she hasn't won the title since 2002 and hasn't reached the semifinals since 2003.

"I just keep trying, and it hasn't been working out for me," she said. "I may have gotten nervous in the past or may have basically choked a few matches away. Some matches I just lost because maybe I wasn't intense enough, or maybe I didn't do enough work before I got here."

Determined to avoid another bad start, Williams won the first nine games against Tatishvili, and 30 of the first 37 points. There was no letup from there, and she was still pumping her fist and shouting "Come on!" a game from the finish.

The No. 1-ranked Williams won 56 of 78 points, including 28 of 33 on her serve, and hit eight aces. She extended her winning streak to 25 consecutive matches, and since the loss to Razzano, she's 68-3, including championships at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

Beginning her bid for a 16th Grand Slam title, Williams maintained a stern expression throughout the match, and allowed herself only a brief smile when Tatishvili pushed a forehand wide on match point.

Williams, who keeps an apartment in Paris, was then interviewed on center court and spoke French with only a slight accent.

"I have been speaking French for years and years, but I don't really have a lot of confidence," she said later in English. "It's way, way more nerve-racking than playing tennis."

Federer also spoke French to the crowd, and also won easily. He lost only seven points on his first serve and was broken just once by Carreno Busta, a 21-year-old Spaniard was making his Grand Slam debut after winning seven consecutive Futures events.

"He has played a lot of matches on clay in comparison with me," Federer said. "I knew it could be tricky if I don't sustain a certain level of play and certain aggressiveness and get caught up maybe in long rallies, maybe what he's looking for. Overall I thought I did well."

Others advancing on a chilly, gray first day of play included Sara Errani, the 2012 runner-up to Maria Sharapova, and 2008 champion Ana Ivanovic.

American Mallory Burdette, whose ranking has climbed to a career-best 80th from 142nd at the start of the year, made a successful Roland Garros debut by beating Donna Vekic 6-3, 6-4.

Burdette, a 22-year-old Stanford alum, said she has enjoyed learning how to play on clay.

"It's a bit of a challenge," she said. "You have to change up your strategy a little bit, especially if you're a big hitter. It takes a little bit of effort, but it's fun."

Dominant serving helped Querrey advance. He had been eliminated the first round at Roland Garros five times, and his only previous victory in the tournament came in 2011 on remote Court 7, where he played again Sunday.

"That's the only court I can win on here," he said with a smile. "I played the best match I've played all year on any surface."

Former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt lost a seesaw marathon to No. 15-seeded Gilles Simon, 3-6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5. No. 4 David Ferrer, a semifinalist last year, eliminated Marinko Matosevic 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

An hour into the tournament, Errani was into the second round. The tenacious Italian beat Arantxa Rus 6-1, 6-2 in the opening match on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Errani reached a Grand Slam final for the first time a year ago at Roland Garros.

"Last year was an unbelievable tournament, the best tournament of my life," Errani said. "But I don't want to think about that. I just want to come here and play another tournament. I try to concentrate on my tennis, not too much about last year."

Now ranked a career-best No. 5, Errani dominated Rus from the baseline and won four games at love. Rus double-faulted seven times and lost her 13th consecutive match on the WTA Tour.

Ivanovic, seeded 14th, beat Petra Martic 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Ivanovic improved to 30-4 in the first round of Grand Slam tournaments.

Indy 500 tightens security in wake of Boston bombings

By Steve Keating

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - Security at Sunday's Indianapolis 500 will be ramped up as race officials of one of the year's biggest one-day sporting events respond to last month's deadly Boston Marathon bombings.

Officials of the race, which routinely attracts crowds of about 300,000 to the sprawling 2.5 mile oval, said the added security steps include closing traffic on a major route into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and banning oversized coolers.

While the enhanced security will cause some headaches, the sight of runners who were unable to finish the Boston Marathon completing the distance at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is sure to provide one of the inspirational moments of the day.

About 35 runners will run about one-half mile from Turn Four to one of the most famous finish lines in all of sports - the Yard of Bricks - about 10 minutes before the start of the race.

All of the participants in the ceremonial run were prevented from finishing the Boston Marathon as the race was halted when two pressure cooker bombs left at the finish line exploded in a crowd of thousands of spectators and athletes, killing three people and injuring 264 others.

"The tragedy last month in Boston still resonates with everyone, so we wanted to give runners the chance to finish the race in front of thousands of fans who will appreciate their persistence and determination," said Doug Boles, IMS chief operating officer.

"Everyone will remember the victims while also celebrating the strength and indomitable spirit of these special competitors as they cross the hallowed Yard of Bricks."

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Abel Trujilo scuffled at the UFC 160 weigh-ins, and Mike Tyson loved it

During the UFC 160 weigh-ins, Khabib Nurmagomedov blew weight, wore a wig, started a fight and made Mike Tyson laugh. He had a full day.

Nurmagomedov weighed in at 158.5 for his lightweight bout with Abel Trujilo. He will forfeit 20 percent of his purse, so maybe that's why he was angry when he faced off with Trujilo. He got in his opponent's face, first bumping Trujilo's head and then pushing him back. He was quickly escorted off stage by the UFC's Burt Watson.

The best part of the scuffle? Mike Tyson was on stage and loved every minute of it. Look in the upper right-hand corner of the video to see his reaction.

Finally, A Wrinkle Reducer That Is Also The Embodiment Of Evil

Our superficial, beauty-obsessed culture is pretty scary. People starve themselves or have serious surgeries so they can look a certain way. But for better or worse (definitely worse) we're all pretty used to hearing about those beauty interventions. Which is why it's unusual to see a new wrinkle-reducer and immediately want to shit your pants or run away. Or both. But behold.

The Facewaver Exercise Mask uses stretching and tightening action for "kneading out wrinkles, lines and sag." The site recommends you use it for five minutes a day to get younger-looking skin. The problem is that during those five minutes you will send anyone you encounter into cardiac arrest as a result of their general shock and terror. Or you yourself will be killed because people will assume that you are a zombie. And frankly, if you choose to wear this they won't be totally wrong.

Some products from the Japan Trend Shop can be very soothing, but this just isn't one of them. It's scary enough to see someone wearing one of those green face masks before bed or even just using a Shake Weight. When will the madness end? [Japan Trend Shop]

Good, glorious food! | Janet's Notebook

We?re due to visit a friend?in another part of the country.

Weeks before our departure, my friend showed signs of a panic attack. She sent me emails, asking: ?What would you like to eat? What do you not eat?? ?Are you a vegetarian??

After reading my posts about dogs, she finally had a meltdown. She revealed, ?I do have 2 dogs you know.?

Welcome to the British hospitality.

I don?t like my guests to be difficult, and so I wouldn?t like to become one myself. Be grateful. Don?t ask people to prepare what you want to eat. Behave like a pig: eat what you?re given. It?s the excitement about travelling: being a bit different from your normal life.?I always tell my son that unless it?s medically necessary ? such as if you have a nut allergy or if you have?coeliac disease or if you?re diabetic, you shouldn?t be a difficult person when it comes to food. However, he doesn?t seem to understand this message sometimes. He and his father still refuse to eat some of the Chinese delicacies that I eat, like chicken feet.

Many years ago, I invited two Chinese friends for dinner. I knew they were very religious. They lived in a commune in London and they were vegetarian. Understanding that they were vegetarian, I spent the whole afternoon boiling some lovely vegetable soup for them, adding ginger, garlic, herb and spring onion to enhance its flavours. However, they arrived with bags of food, mainly tofu, in many shapes. They refused to drink my soup. I did wonder, why did they prepare animal-shaped tofu bites? If you are a genuine vegetarian, surely you shouldn?t even show any desire for animals?

They explained that they always brought their own food when they visited friends. They belonged to a specific sect of an oriental religion from Korea. They are more than vegetarian. They are not allowed any ingredients which are linked with desires, such as ginger, garlic, chilli and spring onions.

Image by Rhino Neal via Flickr

Though I respected their choices, I must admit I felt rather annoyed. You can tell that I?m?not a purist. I?m very prepared to sell my soul to the devil in exchange for ginger and hot chilli.

Food is an emotive subject. My 80-year-old mum had been through hunger in her life, therefore, she could never comprehend why today?s people would refuse meat. For her and the older generation, it?s illogical to refuse meat, as eating meat would make you fat, and being fat is a sign of fortune and good health.

At home, we eat rather well. My husband, the mathematician, loves cooking, especially when he?s stuck with maths problems and needs to find an outlet. The problem is, when a mathematician cooks, he is scientific and he would keep asking your opinions afterwards. You can?t give a simple comment as ?Lovely! I really enjoyed that.? You have to comment on the texture, combination of herbs used, intensity of flavour, thickness of sauce, ?and even the presentation of food.

And, the mathematician will need all utensils and pans from the cupboard because, apparently, each tool has a different purpose.

According to the man, a saucepan is for cooking liquid, a frying pan is for dry cooking, a saut? pan is for cooking with a thin layer of liquid. When I cook, a simple wok will be enough to conquer the world.

chicken dish

For example, yesterday he cooked this chicken dish. The ingredients included tarragon, parsley, Cr?me Fra?che (you can?t just call it sour cream. You have to call it Cr?me Fra?che.) And he even added wedges of lime on top for decoration.

IMG_7331

He also cooked this pasta dish, mixed with extra-virgin olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes and pine nuts. Though the food was beautifully presented, my son didn?t appreciate the nuances. He removed the lime, visible tarragon, parsley,?pine nuts and sun-dried tomatoes from his plate.

Food

Sometimes I thought, what?s the fuss of all the fancy cooking? When I cook, it?s because I have to, out of necessity. When the man cooks, it?s because he wants to create something, to have fun, and to use up all the pans.

When I visit my friend, I?m sure she will do her best to feed me well.

Functional Apple 1 auctioned off for $6714K, sets new Sotheby's record

With $671,400, you could buy roughly 2,040.7 base-model iPad minis before taxes. One unnamed buyer, however, just laid that amount out for a single Apple 1 from 1976. Auctioned through a Germany-based Sotheby's, The New York Times Bits blog notes the price beats out the firm's $640K record from another unit last November. Interestingly, the seller refurbished this latest Apple 1 to working condition, after paying only $40K for it privately. While it doesn't seem to have the original enclosure, we'd be remiss not to mention that the seller also had Steve Wozniak grace the motherboard with his signature. You'll find more info at the source, while we wrap our heads around how this makes last summer's auction price of $374.5K look like a relative steal.
