American Diver Killed by Great White Shark in Western Australia (ContributorNetwork)

George Thomas Wainwright, 32, was the American professional diver in Australia who was brutally killed by a 10-foot great white shark on Saturday. It was the third fatal shark attack on Australia's west coast in two months.

Wainwright was diving unaccompanied off the picturesque and popular tourist town of Rottnest Island in nearby Perth. He lived in this suburban seaside area while on a work visa for several months. Witnesses from a boat stated they saw large continuous bubbles before Wainwright's body surfaced with horrific injuries.

Now shark hunters are baiting hooks in order to catch the great white to prevent another fatality with a diver or swimmer. Australia is known for sharks, especially great whites, and they are protected. However, they are allowed to hunt them if they are a danger to humans. Besides the land down under having its share of shark attacks there have been plenty others around the world.

Jersey Shore Fatal Attacks -- 1916

Not to be confused at all with the popular reality TV show it was also the site of four fatal shark attacks that was the eventual inspiration for the popular book and 1975 film "Jaws." During a heat wave in the summer of 1916 Charles Vansant, 25, was the first victim in a brutal attack during a swim in the early evening.

Five days later Charles Bruder, 27, was killed at another beach site along the Jersey shore. A shark attacked his abdomen and severed his legs. Almost another week passed a 12-year old boy, Lester Stillwell, was dragged in shallower waters. Stanley Fisher, 24, went into the water to search for the boy and was attacked by the shark and bled to death.

Shirley Ann Durdin -- 1985

Durdin, 33, was diving for scallops while her husband and four children were on the shore in Australia's Peake Bay in 1985. All of a sudden a 20-foot great white shark brutally attacked the woman in half while her family watched in utter horror. When rescuers got to the scene of the attack all that remained was her headless torso, which the shark came back to finish eating. One of the most gruesome fatal shark attacks to ever witness.

Lloyd Skinner -- 2010

In January 2010 at a popular Cape Town, South Africa, beach called Fish Hoek, Lloyd Skinner, 37, was deep in the water when a large shark, some said the size of a dinosaur and longer than a mini-bus , attacked the tourist from Zimbabwe twice. The shark then pulled his body underwater until it was a pool of blood. One witness stated they saw "a gigantic shark eat what looked like a person in from of their beach house." Authorities were only able to recover Skinner's swimming goggles.
