MILAN - Emiliano Mondonico returned to Serie A for the first time in seven years, taking over as coach of last-place Novara for a 2-1 loss to Chievo Verona on Thursday night.

Mondonico, who had not coached in the top division since he was fired by Fiorentina seven years ago, replaced Attilio Tesser on Monday in the 12th Serie A coaching change this season.

Sergio Pellissier scored his 100th goal for Chievo in the 33rd minute, and Cyril Thereau doubled the lead in the 78th. Giuseppe Mascara scored for Novara in the 79th.

Chievo (7-8-6) is ninth with 27 points, while Novara (2-13-6) is 20th with 12.
