It?s all part of the demise of the town of Webster government ? new police station, fire station upgrade, library, middle school, and the most serious issue is replacing a 100-year-old water system and that ultimately spells disaster.
We just have no more tax base to offset these upcoming problems and even if they issue betterments to users for a new system, it?s nothing more than a backdoor method of taxation.
I know that Webster experienced an E. coli problem over 10 years ago, and one of the recommendations of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental protection was to upgrade our aging water system that should be replaced.
Though back then, the town selectmen, town administrator and finance boards were aware of this problem, the only solution for a quick fix was to buy a chlorinated system for the town water supply system as we are on now.
But the town officials did promise they would consider the following year upgrades in the water department such as new town wells, pumps, replacement of all above and below-ground storage tanks. The town did replace a few water mains from the office of community development. But they never considered investing in a bond issue to help defray the cost of a large project such as this.
