Cape Breton's Entertainment Guide ? Do Your Verse: Main-A-Dieu ...

?

(Anita Lahey)

This is an excerpt from Anita Lahey?s recently published poem, The Foe:

Face her in the glass, steamed up.
Eyes alight, left foot forward, arms
up: Raise your prayer wall
against night yet-to-come. One

calamity among countless maybes,
her left hook smashes jaws and levees,
batters the temple, makes way for the flood.
She?ll hurricane you off the ropes.
Lahey will be one of four poets reading their works at ?Poetry With A View 2011? at the Main-A-Dieu Coastal Discovery Centre on Friday evening, July 22.

Main-A-Dieu resident (via England) Sean Howard will read along with New Brunswick born Ian Le Tourneau, and Antigonish poet and novelist, Anne Simpson. Songwriter Ken Chisholm will host and sing a couple of tunes.

This is the fourth event in this summer series (after taking a break last summer) which has consistently attracted capacity crowds.

Lahey?s first poetry collection, Out to Dry In Cape Breton, drew inspiration from her father?s home fishing village. Howard, as a relative newcomer, has especially been inspired by the landscape and sea and animal life of Cape Breton?s south west coast.

Both have new collections this year. Howard?s Incitements, using dadaesque cut-up techniques was published to glowing reviews earlier this year by Gaspereau Press. Lahey?s second collection, Spinning Side Kick, will be published in the autumn by V?hicule Press.

Anne Simpson has authored of three books of poetry, Light Falls Through You, Loop (a finalist for the Governor General?s Award for Poetry), and, most recently, Quick. Her first novel, Canterbury Beach, was shortlisted for the Thomas Head Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award, and her second novel, Falling, was the winner of the Dartmouth Fiction Award and was long-listed for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

Ian LeTourneau has two works of verse published: Defining Range, a chapbook of poems from Gaspereau Press (2006), and Terminal Moraine, a full length collection of poems from Thistledown Press (2008).

Tickets for Poetry With A View are ten dollars each and that includes light refreshments. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. Tickets are available either at the Big Wave Cafe (located in the Coastal Discovery Centre) or by calling 902-733-2258.

And bring some extra cash to buy a copy of each of the readers books and get them signed by the authors.

The technique of Emotional Freedom ? valuable information

The technique of Emotional Freedom is a way of healing, based entirely on the assumption that the emotions of the human body and physical symptoms, the energy system at the base of the body, commonly known as the acupuncture meridian system in value. This system is created and recognized by the Chinese for hundreds of years. From this system, the Emotional Freedom Technique was created in 1991 by Gary Craig, whowas an engineer at Stanford. Since the development of this technology has continuously worked to Craig, the technical applications of the emotional 's. improve

The basis of his theory is simple and just gives people a unique insight into their emotional experiences and how to interpret them. The technique Gary Craig's Emotional Freedom theorized that negative emotions caused primarily the result of some interferencewithin the energy system of the human body. And if these feelings are unresolved, the main cause of a variety of physical pains and diseases. The belief was that the feelings of anger and pain factors important in the pathogenesis of human diseases are also the belief of the Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine is confirmed.

The process of emotional freedom began with a method that acupuncture needles is the main focus of the coupledthe mind to tackle the problems. The expert will then affect emotional freedom is different meridian points on the body and face while saying positive statements, otherwise known as "the phase of the Annunciation." These statements are relevant to the problem addressed. The sections are to open up channels of energy in the body so that they flow freely, which in turn frees the mind and body of old, useless energy. Once the energyChannels are clear, the individual will have a new brand of self-consciousness, that of releasing the negative aspects came the interruption of the energy system.

Car Auctions and Rentals made Easy | Car Auctions

Automobile auctions are a great place to get excellent a bargain on cars. But buying cars from auctions can be very complex. This is particularly true for the uninitiated. Of course the cars in auctions are generally less expensive. But they are inexpensive simply because they lack the guarantees that come with cars bought from dealers. The rules in auctions are basic, you bid an item, you pay for it, and you own it. It is for that reason not advisable for persons without significantly experience in motor vehicles to just go to an auction and obtain a auto. What you?ll want if you are planning to purchase a vehicle in an auction is a excellent eye, excellent observation abilities and a willingness to find out the vehicle auction method.

?

You can even make it a organization by purchasing cars at auction and then selling them at a profit. There are numerous people who have made enormous profits by acquiring and selling cars at auction. There are essentially two kinds of automobile auctions, local automobile auctions and on-line vehicle auctions. Each and every of the auctions works differently. Every single has a diverse set of rules so you ought to study them very carefully if you are planning to buy a vehicle from either sort of auction. If you want to buy a vehicle in a auto auction you need to very first pre-register with the local auction you want to join. The pre-registration process won?t take a lot of your time and will present you all the essential details that you will require in order to obtain a automobile. An auction website will typically have an auction staff who will explain to you the rules of their auction website and the procedures and instruction on how to participate and bid on the cars.

?

It is wise to inspect the cars just before the actual bidding begins. Ask the auction organizer or staff if they can allow you to take a closer look at the cars prior to the begin of the actual auction. An additional wise choice is to set your payment limit prior to the actual sale. This way, you won?t fall victim to the trap of overbidding. As in other auctions, it is really crucial that you signal your bids carefully to the auto auctioneer to stay away from confusion. Settle your transaction as soon as the auction ends. Look for the block clerk and settle your accounts with him. A car auction staff will typically be obtainable to help you when you are prepared to pay for the vehicle you have won. He should also be able to guarantee you a good title for the vehicle.

?

You should also check the vehicle soon after you have won and settling your account. Take the vehicle for a test drive and make certain that it conforms to the guarantee and representation made during the auction. Most auction websites would accept check or credit card if you can not pay the vehicle with money. An auction staff will also usually give you a third party financing give. It is advisable though to have your own finances prepared before entering a car auction. Outside financing is usually cheaper than most in-house financing of auction web sites. Ask for an invoice copy from the auction staff. This will allow you to drive or ship your newly bought vehicle to your location. Most automobile auction managers will give you very good deals on shipping arrangements so inquire about this.

?

There genuinely are no considerable differences between a local auction and an online auction. On-line auto auctions work more or less the identical way as local ones. The only disadvantage of online auction web sites is that you won?t be able to inspect the automobile as you would in an actual auto auction. In participating in on-line vehicle auctions be certain that you will be supplied with all the essential details about the vehicle upfront and that there is an actual photograph of the vehicle.

?

Cars bought from an on the web auction are generally shipped to the buyer for a minimal fee. Inspect the auto right away upon arrival at your location to minimize risks. You are now prepared for your first automobile auction. Happy bidding!

UN Report: Immediate Gains in Cleantech and Sustainable ...

Over the next three to four decades, humankind must bring about a fundamental technological overhaul of production processes worldwide to end poverty and avert the likely catastrophic impacts of climate change and environmental degradation, the United Nations says in a new report.

Major investments will be needed worldwide in the development and scaling up of clean energy technologies, sustainable farming and forestry techniques, climate-proofing of infrastructure, and in technologies reducing non-biodegradable waste production, according to The World Economic and Social Survey 2011: The Great Green Technological Transformation, published by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA).

The report says the technological overhaul will need to be on the scale of the first industrial revolution. Over the next 40 years, $1.9 trillion per year will be needed for incremental investments in green technologies. At least one-half, or $1.1 trillion per year, of the required investments will need to be made in developing countries to meet their rapidly increasing food and energy demands through the application of green technologies.

Since the first industrial revolution, world income and population have grown exponentially, but so have energy demand and the production of waste and pollutants. As a result, the global environment?s capacity to cope with human activity has reached its limits, according to the report.

About half of the earth?s forests are gone, groundwater resources are being depleted and contaminated, enormous losses in biodiversity have already occurred, and climate change threatens the stability of all ecosystems. At the same time, about 40% of humanity, or 2.7 billion people, rely on traditional biomass, such as wood, dung and charcoal, for their energy needs. And 20% have no access to electricity, mainly in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

To achieve a decent living standard for people in developing countries, especially the 1.4 billion still living in extreme poverty, and the additional 2 billion people expected worldwide by 2050, much greater economic progress is needed, the report says.

?This report shows how important technological progress will be for ensuring a future that benefits everyone while protecting our planet,? said Sha Zukang, Under-Secretary-General of UN-DESA and Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, often referred to as Rio+20, to take place in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. ?The report is required reading as we gear up for Rio+20, which is an opportunity to define pathways to a safer, cleaner and more prosperous world for all.?

For the required technological revolution to be successful, the report finds that it must occur within a limited timeframe ? sooner rather than later ? because of growing ecological pressures. To induce the necessary technological progress and adaptation, the report says, governments both nationally and through intensified international cooperation must play a central role.

?Business as usual is not an option,? said Rob Vos, lead author of the report. ?Even if we stop the global engines of growth now, resource depletion and pollution of our natural environment would continue because of existing production methods and consumption habits. Without drastic improvements in and diffusion of green technologies, we will not reverse the ongoing ecological destruction and secure a decent livelihood for all of humankind, now and in the future.?

The green energy transformation

A comprehensive global energy transition is urgently needed to avert a major planetary catastrophe, the report finds. The scaling up of existing green technologies and creation of new technologies are needed to improve energy efficiency. They also require fewer resources and minimize pollution. At present, 90% of energy is generated through brown technologies that use fossil fuels, which are responsible for about 60% of carbon dioxide emissions.

Reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, the report says, will require drastic changes in consumption patterns, transportation systems, residential and building infrastructure, and water and sanitation systems.

To accelerate technological transformation to meet emissions and energy-use targets, the report recommends that policies be guided by four key goals:

  1. improving energy efficiency without expanding consumption where energy-use levels are high
  2. supporting a broad global energy technology development portfolio while scaling up the use of known green technologies in specific places
  3. supporting greater experimentation and longer discovery times
  4. applying superior governance and accountability strategies in energy-related technological development than at present.

A truly ?green? revolution in agriculture

Modern agriculture contributes about 14% of greenhouse gas emissions, and the management of land-use and water is not sustainable, the report says. These have been the outcomes of the so-called green revolution in agriculture of the 1960s and 1970s, which boosted food production worldwide, but also accelerated land degradation and water pollution.

Global food production must increase by 70% to 100% by 2050 to feed a growing population. To meet this challenge, the report calls for a ?truly green agricultural revolution?, using farming techniques that require less water wastage and less use of chemicals and pesticides that cause land degradation.

The report says these farming technologies exist, but their deployment needs to be scaled up and made affordable to farmers worldwide, but especially to smallholders in developing countries.

Economies of scale in sustainable food production will have to be promoted through adequate support services, not only in the form of access to sustainable farming techniques, but also through upgraded distribution networks and transportation, sustainable irrigation and water management systems, and access to credits and land. This will have vast implications for land use and agriculture.

Innovation for disaster risk reduction

The incidence of natural disasters has increased fivefold since the 1970s, the report finds. Drought and floods have become more frequent and intense, and often affected the poorest countries the most. Climate change induced by human activity is to blame in part. Deforestation, degradation of natural coastal protection and poor infrastructure increase the likelihood that weather shocks will turn into human disasters.

Reducing disaster risk, the report says, will require significant technological and social change. Reducing disaster risk will involve changes in the design of settlements and infrastructure.

The report says that affordable technological innovation, drawing on local knowledge, is needed to adapt disaster- resilient infrastructure, housing and natural coastal protection to ground conditions. Because natural events do not respect political boundaries, national efforts must be supported by regional and global cooperation.

Policy changes needed at all levels

Most efforts for a technological transformation must occur at the national level and build upon local conditions and resources, the report recognizes.

Besides reshaping national development efforts, the report calls for international commitment in the areas of technological development and cooperation, external assistance, investment finance and trade rules. Businesses and governments tend to see inadequate financing as the greatest obstacle to the more rapid adaptation of clean technologies.

Given the limited capacity to mobilize long-term financing domestically in many developing countries, the report says, an important share of additional investment needs must be financed by international resource transfers.

The report finds the commitment set out in the Copenhagen Accord to mobilize $30 billion between 2010 and 2012 and $100 billion per year by 2020 in transfers to developing countries as a step in the right direction. But, it adds, delivery on these commitments will need to be accelerated and resources scaled up to ensure developing countries meet the challenge.

The report further proposes to build a global public technology-sharing regime and networks of international technology research and application centres. To rapidly spread green technology, the report says, more multilateral intellectual property rights modalities must be used than presently allowed under the World Trade Organization.

?The need for a technological revolution is both a development and existential imperative for civilization,? Vos said. ?This is why sustainable development is so important now, because it is not only about making improvements for life today, but also for future generations.?

Taiwan's HTC quarterly net beats forecasts (Reuters)

TAIPEI (Reuters) ? Taiwan smartphone maker HTC Corp saw its net profit double in the second quarter, beating market expectations and boosted by surging customer demand for its high-tech gadgets.

The world's No.5 handset maker posted second-quarter profit of T$17.52 billion ($608.44 million), compared to T$8.64 billion a year earlier, it said in a statement on Wednesday. It did not give further details.

"The second-quarter result was pretty solid. Now the market will wait to see if the guidance for the third quarter can also beat the street expectation, which is a 5-15 percent month-month growth in sales," said Yuanta Securities analyst Bonnie Chang.

HTC will hold a briefing on the second-quarter results and give third-quarter guidance on July 29.

A poll by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S of 10 analysts had yielded a median forecast for a T$16.53 billion in profit.

Chang believed the better-than-consensus result was based on

upside from non-operating income such as interest income and foreign exchange gains, while operating income was not expected to contain big surprises.

Separately, HTC said on Wednesday that it plans to buy S3 Graphics for $300 million from Via Technologies, a move to enhance its market position by strengthening the company's graphic technology. The acquisition extends its IP portfolio with the addition of 235 patents and pending applications, including those related to graphics visualization technologies.

S3 Graphics, which is also owned by HTC's chairwoman, Cher Wang, won a patent case against Apple Inc early this month.

HTC shares closed up 3.3 percent at T$1,095 on Wednesday ahead of the earnings announcement, outperforming the 0.46 percent rise in the main share index.

Shares of the Taiwanese smartphone maker have dropped 15 percent since June 7, triggered by its removal from Goldman Sachs's conviction list on a potential downward order revision.

Market talk that HTC's June sales might be down or flat month-on-month sent its shares down further until the company announced record monthly sales figures early to relieve the pressure.

Chang expected shares of HTC would consolidate before the investor conference at the end of this month, trading in a range between T$1,100-1,200.

In June, HTC's CEO Peter Chou told a shareholder meeting that the fundamentals of the company had not changed and he remained positive on the outlook in the second half.

HTC, which started transforming from a contract maker to a global consumer brand in 2006, saw in April its market cap surpass Nokia's, who still makes 10 phones for each one HTC makes. This year HTC's volumes have also surpassed phone industry majors Sony Ericsson and Motorola.

Last Monday, HTC opened the firm's new regional headquarters in Britain, reflecting its fast growth in Europe.

Research company Gartner has forecasted the smartphone market would expand by 58 percent this year and 35 percent next year.
