Warner buys Flixster

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is expanding its digital rollout, today announcing an agreement to buy the popular Flixster and Rotten Tomatoes websites. The deal, which encompasses both sites, is part of Warner's ongoing studio-agnostic initiative to grow digital content ownership. Both sites will continue to operate independently.''Driving the growth of digital ownership is a central, strategic focus for Warner Bros.,'' said Kevin Tsujihara, president of WBHE. ''The acquisition of Flixster will allow us to advance that strategy and promote initiatives that will help grow digital ownership.''Flixster's website is fairly popular, but it's the company's film discovery application that Warner's more interested in. Downloaded more than 35 million times, the app is used by 25 million users per month worldwide. Rotten Tomatoes, while it lacks as significant a mobile presence, is still a taste-driver, with over 12 million unique visitors per month. Warner is one of the biggest backers of the UltraViolet digital distribution technology, which will enable consumers to purchase and digitally store content to access from any digital device with an Internet connection, starting this fall. The company recently launched a consumer application called ''Digital Everywhere'' that lets consumers organize and access their digital library from any device. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
